A day in the life of a modern day Cinders

After a couple of sleepless nights I am pleased to report that I slept in this morning - not waking until nearly half past eight and not getting out of bed until I had listened to the news at 9am.  Imagine my surprise when I found this story on my door mat - I thought that I ought to share it with you.

Once upon a time there was a (not so )young girl who awoke with a sense of doom.  Her day was laid out before her - cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning.  First there was the fire hearth - thick with soot because her wicked stepmother had just had the chimney fixed.  Whilst there she also had to watch her step mother's favourite sewing channel where someone was modelling a beautiful apron - it would really suit Cinders - if only she was allowed to buy the pattern and make it. Cinders would really like to personalise it like the nice lady on the tv had.

Then it was onto the kitchen - her wicked stepmother had spent a lot of time decorating recently and the kitchen had become the dumping area for everything - it was time - she said - to get back on track.  Everything needed sweeping, dusting and cleaning.  There were even some floor tiles to scrub later.

Cinders was in the middle of the job, just about to load the washing machine with the dogs bed, when there was a sudden knock at the door.  Could this be the dream prince that the fairy tales always mention.  She hadn't been to any balls recently so it wouldn't be a glass slipper - but a girl could hope couldn't she? Tentatively Cinders opened the door.  At first she couldn't see anyone - just a huge bag of carrier bags.  Then came a booming voice - "sort these bags out - make a carrier bag tidy and make sure it fits my new décor"  "b b b ut I don't have any fabric that matches" stammered Cinders, fearing her stepmothers wrath.  "Then delve into your secret Tea Towel stash" came the reply.

After finishing the tidy Cinders hoped for a quick lunch but needed to finish the kitchen first - starting with those smelly dog beds.  Then she was expected to complete some hand sewing.  Her stepmother was "making" a quilt and another block needed to be sewn - Cinders found it on her task list.  So she worked through - trying to put off the time when she would be forced to sit down, sew and watch one of her stepmothers trashy films.  When would her Prince Charming arrive and carry her off away from this life?

Having completed the block - or as much as the time would allow her, Cinders went back to the utility room - how could the dog beds produce so much fluff and hair - no wonder it took so long to clean.  As she was pondering this her step mother called - "dahling - could you come here pretty please?"  Looking around Cinders could see no one else so presumed it was for her - was her luck beginning to change at last?  Running back into the lounge she spotted her stepmother lying on the sofa with a gorgeous young man feeding her grapes.  "Yes mother - how can I help you?"  "Be a dahling and take the dogs for a walk will you so that my friend and I can be alone" came the reply.

As Cinders walked along the beach she contemplated her life - it would never be any different - there would always be rooms to clean and dogs to walk but there would also be things to sew and take pride in.  She was fed, watered, kept warm and had some fantastic friends, like Buttons, who would always be there for her - who could ask for more?  Perhaps there was no such thing as Prince Charming - in reality her "Prince Charming " lived within her heart and her friendships with others - she didn't need to keep looking and searching for something that may never be found.  Leave that to others, Cinders thought -  all really was good with her world!

Bless - a happy ending.  I guess that this picture might also sum up Cinder's day!

When it came to planning her wedding dress, 39-year-old mother Tania Jennings decided to take a huge leap of faith. She spent months -- a whopping 1,000 hours -- crocheting the wedding gown of her dreams.Happymum - saw this article today about a crochet wedding dress - and it's in purple!  I thought of you.

  2. Ahh! Indeed. You poor old cinders, what a drudge you have become, the only positive thing is you do sort of get a choice of the chores you have to do!! All you have to do is to 'think' about which jobs you would like to do and 'Bingo' you have to do it. Xxxx
