RIP Katie 2001 - 2015

Today is one of those days that every pet owner fears but must also prepare for.  I had known that Katie was not good for several months - slowly, each day, she ate a little bit less - although she did rally when I tried out different ideas for breakfast!  Truthfully, Katie was 14 1/2 years old (equivalent to being over 100 years old in human years) and so a lack of appetite is to be expected.  However this weekend she simply laid on her bed looking at me to help her and do something - I believe that she had simply had enough.

and a few years later when Millie grew up!
So I took her to the vets today, secretly hoping that he would give me some magic cure - but no such luck.  He did say that he thought there was liver failure and some form of growth in her intestine - which would account for the lack of appetite - and that the only way to be sure would be blood tests, body scans and an operation - something which I would not inflict on a dog this old.   I asked if this would be the right time to let her go - and he said that it would.  So we said our goodbyes.

The vets are going to contact me in a few days and we will go on our final walk and scatter Katie's ashes.  She has been a beautiful dog - well apart from the many times that, as a pup, she crawled through the hole in the fence and ran around the horse muck, with me following in my PJ's!  - and will be sorely missed - not least by Millie x

  1. All pet owners will be feeling your pain. She provided many happy hours for our Teens and Teen Two is very upset to hear the news. Teen One isn't home yet but will for sure be upset too.
